The Rochester Mayo baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Spartans' rally fell short as Winona held on for a 5-3 Big Nine Conference win Thursday night.
The Spartans surrendered two runs in the first inning and another run in the third. All three Mayo errors came in the first inning, but the runs in that inning were earned.
The Winhawks added two crucial runs in the top of the sixth.
Jackson Douglas took the loss on the mound for the Spartans. He went six innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and two walks. Douglas also had an impressive 11 strikeouts.
Jeff Schultz was the winner for Winona. He tossed seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out three.

John Lundquist paced the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Christian Rosenow and Michael Michalak had one hit apiece, and Luke Dozier added an RBI for Mayo.
Hunter Kruse led Winona, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
"Winona has a nice ball club," Mayo coach Dan Hoefs said. "Schultz was not overpowering on the mound, but he threw strikes and his defense made the plays behind him. ... John Lundquist's two hits (HR and single) were very hard hit balls and his bat was a bright spot for us. Jackson Douglas had a solid first outing on the hill. He had 11 strikeouts and when he started getting his curveball over the plate, he was tough."
The Spartans return to action at 4 p.m. today on the road during a doubleheader at Albert Lea.
