The excitement on the field during the Rochester Honkers' home opener Friday night matched the excitement in the stands for fans who had waited months to see a live sporting event in town.
But that excitement faded in the final two innings as the St. Cloud Rox broke open a close game and beat the Honkers 13-2 at Mayo Field.
St. Cloud sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth inning and scored eight runs, turning a 3-2 lead into an 11-2 lead. The Rox added two more runs in the ninth.
The Honkers got off to a slow start, as staring pitcher Chris Harrison allowed the first four batters to reach base. Harrison lasted just one inning and left with Rochester trailing 2-0.
Robert Moore led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run to right field to pull Rochester to within 2-1. After the Rox added a run in the fifth for a 3-1 lead, the Honkers rallied in the sixth, as Ryan Wrobleski drove in Moore with a two-out base hit to make it 3-2.
Rochester would get no closer, though, as the Rox batted around in the eighth, scoring eight runs on six hits and one error.
Garrett Kellogg-Clarke took the loss for Rochester, allowing seven runs on three hits and four walks in 1/3 of an inning.
The Honkers had eight hits in the game, led by Moore and Wrobleski with two each.
Rochester (0-2) plays a doubleheader at Willmar today.
