Arkansas standout Bryce Matthews bashed a three-run, first-inning homer to jumpstart the Honkers on Monday.

Then, five Rochester hurlers overcame four errors –– and three unearned runs –– to help the Honkers hold off Mankato 5-4.

Matthews’ three-run bomb was his second home run of the year. Rochester sent nine men to the plate and led 4-0 after the top of the first inning, but Mankato scratched and clawed their way back into the game.

The MoonDogs were within one (5-4) in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Stone Churby was able to get out of the bases-loaded mess. He teamed up with Kragen Kechely to fire three innings of hitless relief out of the Rochester bullpen.

Churby and Kechely combined to strike out four MoonDogs in the final three innings.

Honkers starter Eli Saul didn’t allow an earned run in his three innings. Jack Zalasky picked up the win.

Matthews, Connor Denning and Ryan Wrobleski all had two hits for Rochester.

Former Rochester Century hurler Thomas Bruss pitched three scoreless innings for Mankato.

Rochester (2-4) will go for the sweep of Mankato today. First pitch it scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from Franklin Rogers Park.
