Bryce Matthews homered and drove in three runs and his Arkansas teammate Robert Moore also delivered a bomb, but the Honkers could not stop the losing streak. Despite holding a 4-0 first-inning lead, Waterloo was able to come-from-behind and beat the Honkers 8-7 at Mayo Field on Tuesday night.
Matthews hammered a three-run homer in the first inning, and moments later, Moore smacked his homer to give the Honkers a 4-0 lead. But Waterloo's Peyton Williams hit a three-run bomb of his own in the ensuing inning off Rochester starter Tanner Cunha.
The Honkers led 6-4 in the fifth inning, but Waterloo pushed across three big runs off reliever AJ Campbell to take the lead and they never looked back.
The Honkers threatened in both the eighth and the ninth innings. In the second-to-last frame, Ryan Wrobleski drew a bases-loaded walk to trim the deficit to 8-7. But with the tying run 90 feet away, Moore grounded into a force out and Tanner Tweedt struck out swinging.
In the ninth, the Honkers had one final gasp. Jacob Shaver drew a two-out walk and Taison Corio was hit by the pitch to move the tying run into scoring position. Connor Denning had been white-hot early in the season, but he couldn't come through. Denning grounded out to first to end the ballgame.
Campbell suffered the loss. He gave up six hits and four runs (three earned) with two walks and three strikeouts in four innings of relief. Cunha lasted just two innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs. Stone Churby continued his outstanding season with a scoreless ninth inning. Churby has yet to allow an earned run this season.
Matthews is up to 16 runs driven in this season. The homer was his fourth of the season, and the big man is hitting .299. Moore's 2-for-4 performance pushed his batting average up to .329. But the bottom-four in the Honkers lineup couldn't come through. Tweedt, Steven Moretto, Kyle Huckstorf and Shaver combined to go 1-for-15.
The Honkers will look to get back on track on Wednesday when they hit the road to face St. Cloud at 7:05 p.m.
