The surging Rochester Royals are the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Section 1B amateur baseball playoffs and will face the Northfield Knights in a three-game series.
The winner of the best-of-three series will earn one of the four Class B state tournament berths from Section 1B. The losing team will drop into a redemption series with two other teams in a single-elimination affair to determine the fourth state team from the section.
Northfield is the No. 3 seed in the section tournament and will host the Royals in the first game on Friday at 8 p.m. The second game is at Mayo Field at 2 p.m. on Aug. 9. The third game, if necessary will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at Northfield.
The Royals and Northfield split a pair of games during the regular season. The Royals won 6-2 in Rochester and the Knights won 8-2 in Northfield.
The Royals (10-7) will enter the section playoffs on a roll as they have won four straight games. Three of those wins were by the 10-run rule. The Royals closed their regular season with a 13-1 win over Elko this past Friday.
Former minor-league pitchers Mitch Brown and Matt Meyer have both been pitching well for the Royals.
Elko is the No. 1 seed in Section 1B and it will play the winner of the No. 6 and 7 play-in. The other series will feature No. 2 Miesville vs. No. 5 Dundas.
