ST. CLOUD -- Rochester Community and Technical College has advanced to the Super Region Tournament in junior college baseball.
RCTC placed in the top four of the 10-team Region XIII/ North Plains District Tournament over the weekend to earn a Super Region berth.
The Yellowjackets went 2-1 in the region/district event held in St. Cloud. RCTC, the No. 4 seed, opened with a narrow 1-0 win over No. 5 Rainy River, lost 11-7 in 10 innings to top-seeded St. Cloud Tech and then rebounded to topple Minnesota State-Fergus Falls 11-1.
In the region/district opener, Rochester's T Palmer Mickelson, a Century grad, threw a two-hit shutout over five innings. He struck out six and did not issue a walk.
RCTC had a walk-off win in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan Roby hit a double and Izaak Stevens had a game-winning RBI single.
Stevens had another big game in the loss to St. Cloud. He went 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
In the key third game for RCTC, Brady Nelsen pitched a six-hitter over six innings and allowed one earned run in the victory over Fergus Falls.
RCTC (25-17-1) closed the game out by the 10-run rule with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Stevens concluded his hot tournament by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Gabe Sepulveda went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs for RCTC. Grant Miskimins also drove in two runs while Blake Schilling and Cade Hinkle both had two hits and one RBI.
The Super Regional will be this Thursday-Saturday in St. Cloud. The winner of the Super Regional advances to the Division III NJCAA National Tournament in Tennessee.
