Matt Meyer pitched 8 2/3 innings of shutout ball as the Rochester Royals blanked the Northfield Knights 2-0 in amateur baseball on Sunday at Mayo Field.
Meyer allowed nine hits and struck out 14 while issuing three walks. Despite allowing 12 base runners, the left-hander did not allow a run. Jake Halverson came on to get the final out in the ninth inning to earn the save in the Section 1B contest.
It was the second straight section win for the Royals. They had rallied past the Miesville Mudhens 5-2 for a road win on Friday.
The Royals were held to four hits in the win over Northfield. Sam Warren went 2-for-4. Matthew Hayford went 1-for-2 with a run scored and Logan Milene was 1-for-4 with a run score. The Royals did not have an RBI in the contest.
Jake Mathison pitched the first six innings for Northfield. He took the loss despite allowing just four hit, one walk and two unearned runs.
The Royals needed some last-inning heroics to slip past Miesville on Friday.
Mudhens starting pitcher Matt Moore took a 1-0 lead and a no-hitter into the ninth inning. But the Royals scored five runs on three hits in the inning and knocked Moore out with one out in the ninth.
Drew Lingen started the rally with a walk and Tim Oesterlin sacrificed pinch runner Ryan Maiers to second. Michael Michalak then tied the game with an RBI single and Halverson followed with an RBI double to put the Royals up 2-1 and end Moore's night.
Milene walked and Gabe Sepulveda followed with a two-run double to put the Royals up 4-1. Sepulveda later scored on an error for the final Royals run.
Left-hander Matteo Finocchi pitched the first eight innings to earn the victory. He allowed one earned run on nine hits and struck out 13.
Meyer pitched a rocky bottom of the ninth, but escaped allowing just one run. He allowed two hits and walked two.
The Royals (15-10) will host the Cannon Falls Bears at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mayo Field in a make-up game.
