ESCANABA, Mich. -- The Rochester Community and Technical College men's basketball team has reached the Division II Region 13 Tournament championship game.
The Yellowjackets advanced to the title game by opening region play with an 89-79 victory over Dakota College of Bottineau, N.D., on Saturday. RCTC will play in the region title game on Sunday.
RCTC got into some foul trouble in the first half and trailed 47-43 at the break. The Yellowjackets held 46-32 scoring advantage over the final 20 minutes.
"Second half was a very good half," RCTC coach Brian LaPlante said. "We defended much better and hit timely shots."
Jerome Cunningham battled foul trouble but he led RCTC with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Keivonte Watts had a strong overall game with 20 points, six rebounds and six assists. Cunningham made 10 of 15 shots while Watts was 7-for-11 from the field as they helped RCTC shoot 53.3 percent.
Quincy Burland had a big game off the bench for RCTC as he made 5 of 7 shots from the floor and was 5-for-5 at the line to score 16 points in just 16 minutes of playing time. Elijah Flenorl had 11 points and four steals while Devyn Frye and Quentin Williams both had eight points. Frye added six assists while Williams pulled down four rebounds.
RCTC held a 31-22 rebounding advantage and had 10 turnovers to Dakota's 14.
The Yellowjackets will play host Bay College in the region title game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
"Should be a good one," LaPlante said.
The RCTC-Bay winner will advance to a district title game that will determine a national qualifier for the NJCAA Division II tournament.
