ESCANABA, Mich. — The Rochester Community and Technical College women's basketball team has won the Division II Region 13 tournament championship and now is just one win away from a national tournament berth.
The unbeaten Yellowjackets (16-0) topped United Tribes 75-64 in the regional title game Sunday.
"I am so proud of this group," RCTC coach Jason Bonde said. "They continue to grow as a team and as individuals."
As they did in the regional semifinals against Bay College, the Yellowjackets played a strong second half to pull out the victory. RCTC held a slim 32-29 lead at the half and then went on a pivotal 21-14 run in the third quarter.
Olivia Christianson had a huge game for RCTC, with 32 points and eight steals. She was named the Region 13 MVP and an All-Region selection. She made 12 of 20 shots from the floor and was 4-for-8 from 3-point range.
Ravyn Miles was also an All-Region selection. She had nine points and four assists in the regional final. Myia Ruzek had 16 points, five rebounds and two assists while Kandace Sikkink had 11 points and nine rebounds.
"She played great defense on their post," Bonde said of Sikkink.
Bonde also said Lexi Hugeback had a stellar defensive game. She had four points, six rebounds and blocked four shots.
"Her defense was a difference maker," Bonde said.
RCTC held a 48-43 edge on the boards and held United Tribes to 34.8 percent shooting from the floor. The Yellowjackets had 13 turnovers and United Tribes had 18.
"(We) outrebounded them and we took care of the ball," Bonde said.
RCTC will travel to Nebraska and play North Platte North East Community College in the district championship game on Saturday. The winner will advance to the Division II NJCAA national tournament.
