The RCTC men's basketball team got defensive to win the Division II Region 13 Tournament.
The Yellowjackets got a defensive stop in the final seven seconds to nip host Bay College 66-65 in the region championship game on Sunday.
RCTC will now play in the district championship game to determine a national qualifier.
"It was a nail biter," RCTC coach Brian LaPlante said. "We played an excellent second half, holding Bay to 22 points. We had to overcome a lot of adversity throughout the game but prevailed as we got a stop inside of seven seconds to secure the win."
RCTC trailed 43-38 at the half before going on a 28-22 scoring run over the final 20 minutes.
Jerome Cunningham led the way for RCTC. The 6-foot-4 sophomore had 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists and was named the MVP of the regional. He averaged 20 points and nine rebounds in the two region games.
Keivonte Watts had 13 points while Quincy Burland had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Yellowjackets. Elijah Flenorl had seven points and five rebounds while Quentin Williams also had five rebounds.
RCTC held a slim 34-33 edge on the boards and had 12 turnovers to seven for Bay College. A big difference was shooting as the Yellowjackets made 49.1 percent of their shots (28-for-57) and Bay shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61).
RCTC (12-5) has now won nine straight games. The Yellowjackets will host Nebraska champion Southeast Community College in the district title game on Saturday. The winner qualifies for the Division II NJCAA National Tournament.
