Austin native Both Gach has entered his name in the transfer portal, suggesting he’s ready to leave the University of Minnesota men’s basketball program for another school, according to the Star Tribune.
Gach transferred to Minnesota this past year after two seasons spent at Pac-12 Conference school Utah. Gach dealt with a foot injury much of his time with Minnesota and had an underwhelming season. After a hot start against non-conference opponents, he struggled in the Big Ten and finished the year averaging 6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
Gach had foot surgery in March.
If Gach does leave, he would become the 10th out of 11 players from Minnesota’s 2020-21 team to enter the portal and exit. The one player remaining is sophomore forward Isaiah Ihnen.
The Gophers finished this past season 14-15 overall and 6-14 in the Big Ten. Head coach Richard Pitino was fired after the season ended, with 40-year-old, former Gophers player and Minneapolis native Ben Johnson replacing him.
Johnson has signed six transfers for next year, including four guards and one 3-point shooting specialist small forward. The latter is Jamison Battle, a former DeLaSalle (Minneapolis) standout who played the last two seasons at George Washington.
Gach would have figured to be in competition with all of them, though each is from a mid-major program.
Gach averaged 10.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists in his sophomore season at Utah.
