Blue Devils on 10-game winning streak

BRAINERD — The Riverland Blue Devils baseball team continued its winning ways on Monday with a doubleheader sweep of Central Lakes.

Run production wasn't a problem for the visiting Blue Devils in a 19-0 win to open the Minnesota College Athletic Conference, non-divisional twinbill. Riverland scored a 5-2 win in the late game to complete the sweep.

Kyle Young hit a two-run home run in the first inning to get the Blue Devils rolling in the opener. Jordan Mondeel was hit by a pitch to start the game and Young followed with a long ball.

The Blue Devils went on to score five runs in the first inning rally. They then added seven more runs in the second inning and turned the game into a rout. Kyal "Aussie" Williams was the starter and got the pitching win.

"We came out swinging and took it to them right away," Riverland coach Scott Koenigs said. "They weren't going to hit Aussie, so we got him out of there and put some guys in there who hadn't thrown for some time. I was happy with the effort in the first game."

Central Lakes came to play in the second game and scored an early run. It would stay close the whole way, until the Blue Devils scored some late runs to seal the win.

Young also hit a home run in the late game. Adam Carroll got the mound win and improved to 4-1 on the season. This was the 10th win in a row for Riverland.

"The second game was a situation where game one was too easy and we didn't play hard," Koenigs said. "Their pitcher hit the spots and had our guys out in front on their swings. Still, we got the job done and completed the sweep."

Riverland (18-9) is scheduled to open MCAC South play on Wednesday at home against Anoka-Ramsey.
