Boys baseball: Rebels win big in home opener

ADAMS — Playing for the first time this season on their home field gave the Southland Rebels a chance to show off their hitting prowess in a 10-run win over Lewiston-Altura.

After repeated rainouts, the Rebels finally played a Three Rivers Conference home game on Monday. Alan May was the Rebels pitcher and he celebrated the occasion by hitting a pair of home runs in an 11-1 win.

In the bottom of the first inning, May ignited the Rebels offense with a leadoff home run. This started a six-run rally as the Rebels cruised to the lopsided win and remained unbeaten on the season.

Walks followed to Adam Kiefer and Trevor Emanuel to keep the rally rolling in the first inning. Josh Landherr then stroked an RBI single. Lucas Anderson had another hit to load the bases.

Tyler Kressin added to the Rebels lead with a two-run single. Dylan Heimer later doubled to score the final two runs of the rally and the home team had a 6-0 lead.

"We finally got the home opener in and the guys had fun hitting the ball around the park," Southland coach Scott Retterath said. "The field was a little soggy but not bad. Alan got us going and then hit another solo shot in the third inning."

By that time, May had a 9-0 lead. Although he gave up an unearned run in the top of the fourth, May was never threatened on the mound and improved to 3-0 on the season. The Rebels finished it with two more scores in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the 10-run rule.

Southland (6-0) is scheduled to play another conference home game this afternoon against Dover-Eyota.
