Boys Basketball | Lourdes 51, Pine Island 49

PINE ISLAND — Jacob Schaefer banked in a running shot from 5 feet out with three seconds left in regulation to give Lourdes a 51-49 win over Pine Island in Hiawatha Valley League boys basketball Tuesday.

It was a Nick Hanson 3-pointer with about one minute left that tied the score, helping Lourdes to a comeback win.

Schaefer, who Lourdes coach Jim Daly said struggled some with his play, finished with 21 points. Hanson had 16.

"We didn't play particularly well, but you have to give Pine Island credit for that," Daly said. "They were the reason we didn't play well."

Pine Island got solid games from freshman Broc Finstuen with 13 points and senior Ben Warneke with 11. Finstuen added eight rebounds.

Daly said his team has a long way to go.

"We are inexperienced in a lot of areas," said Daly, whose only returning starter is 6-foot-8 star Schaefer.

Lourdes is 2-0. Pine Island is 0-3.
