Boys Basketball | Mankato West 74, Mayo 55

MANKATO — Mayo turned in a great first half, but couldn't maintain that strong play as it fell 74-55 to Mankato West in Big Nine Conference boys basketball Friday.

The Spartans led 39-38 at the break.

"It was a great first half for us on the road against a very solid squad," Mayo coach Shaun Lang said. "We took the lead into the locker room and scored on the first possession to start the second half. Play got very physical in the second half and slipped away from us."

Mayo lost despite another strong effort from sophomore center Dan Jech. Jech had a double-double, with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked three shots.

Guard Maurice Cain also was in double-figures for Mayo, with 12 points.

West was led by Jake Dale with 17 points and Austin Majeskie with 16. The Scarlets outscored Mayo 16-5 from the free-throw line.

Mayo is 2-13 in the Big Nine and 3-19 overall. West is 10-5, 13-8.
