Boys basketball | Owatonna 57, Mayo 54

OWATONNA — Rochester Mayo had a tough time getting over the hump in the second half and fell to Owatonna 57-54 Wednesday in Big Nine Conference boys basketball.

The leads changed hands multiple of times in the first half, though Owatonna went on a spurt late to lead 33-25 at intermission.

The second half turned into a defensive battle, with neither side able to generate much offense.

Mayo had three chances at 3-pointers in the final second, as it tried to tie the game. But all of them missed.

Mayo moved to 6-7 in the Big Nine and 6-13 overall. Owatonna, which has won its last two games, is 5-8, 7-12.

Dan Jech had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Mayo. Teak Oman added 11 points and Alelx Gatzlaff eight. Mayo outrebounded Owatonna 36-23.

Owatonna was led by Andrew Stelter and Zach Shaver, with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Mayo plays at Albert Lea on Friday.
