WINONA — Brady Meyers recorded his first shutout of the season and two Rochester John Marshall players scored their first varsity goals in a 5-0 Big Nine Conference boys hockey victory at Winona on Tuesday.
JM led 3-0 after two periods, then Luke Johnson and Logan Braun each scored their first goals for the Rockets' varsity team in the third.
JM improved to 7-4-0 in Big Nine play and 10-9-0 overall, marking the first time since the end of the 2012-13 regular season that the Rockets have been above .500.
The Rockets put 16 shots on goal in the opening period, but didn't get on the scoreboard until early in the second, when Isaac Lamppa set up Cory Checco for a short-handed goal. Lamppa scored a short time later on a power play, then Josh Frerks added a goal to make it 3-0.
JM is on a four-game winning streak heading into Thursday's 7:30 p.m. home game against Austin at the Rochester Recreation Center.

"We had a really good start," JM coach Jay Ness said. "We were getting chances, they just weren't going in. … We've won four in a row now. We're feeling better and doing a lot of things we weren't doing early in the year."
