SOUTH ST. PAUL — Rochester John Marshall put itself in a good situation: Tied against the No. 6-ranked team in Class A boys hockey midway through the third period.
But the Rockets were whistled for a penalty with about three minutes remaining and South St. Paul capitalized on the power play. The late goal gave the Packers a 2-1 non-conference victory against JM at Wakota Arena on Tuesday.
"The boys played really well," JM co-head coach Jared Skovbroten said. "I don't think we gave up a shot for about the first 11 minutes of the third period. We can take away a lot of good things from a close game against a good team like this."
South St. Paul (13-6-0) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a goal by Jesse Poznikowich. JM responded six minutes into the third, when Reed Miller scored a power-play goal with an assist from Ryan Lakin.
Adam Barlow netted the game-winner, an unassisted power-play goal, for South St. Paul, with 2:50 remaining.
