Rochester Mayo began its boys soccer season with a tough 1-0 loss to top-15 ranked team Lakeville North on Thursday.
The game was scoreless at halftime. North got its goal midway through the second half on a nicely placed shot into the left-upper corner of the Mayo net.
The Spartans had a penalty shot a short time later, but it was saved by the North goalie. A rebound shot by Mayo sailed over the crossbar.
Mayo outshot North 15-7.
"We had several shots saved well by their goalkeeper, and a shot that rebounded from their right post," Mayo coach Charles Abboud said.

Abboud was generally pleased with his team's play.
"All in all the Spartans did well, and were unlucky in not coming out with a win," Abboud said. "We had an outstanding game from freshman goalkeeper Liam Claton, center back senior Joel Wagar, right midfielder junior Zach Reeves, and strikers seniors Blake Hess and Gavin Sparks."
Mayo hosts Rosemount at 7 p.m. today at Regional Sports Stadium.
