MINNEAPOLIS — As expected, Lourdes made it safely through the first round of the state Class A boys tennis tournament Tuesday at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center.
The Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the state, blasted to a 6-1 win over unranked Foley.
Foley was impressive at two spots, however. At No. 1 singles, David Turlington needed three sets and a tie-breaker to beat Foley's Zack Kantor 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 10-7. Turlington is ranked fifth in state Class A singles, Kantor sixth. Foley also pulled out a 6-3, 0-6, 10-8 win at No. 3 doubles.
Lourdes won the rest of the matches in straight sets and ran its record to 11-4 overall.
Next up for the Eagles is a major showdown in the 8 a.m. state semifinals. There they'll face No. 1-ranked and defending state champion Blake. Blake and Lourdes met in last year's state title dual, with the Bears winning 5-2.
