MINNEAPOLIS — Rochester Mayo's Sebastian Vile is staring at quite a rematch. He knows that Wayzata's Nick Beaty will be gunning for him.
Vile and Beaty both won twice Thursday in the first two rounds of the state Class AA boys state individual tennis tournament at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center.
Beaty won the state championship in 2014. The senior is trying to do it again, but he has two matches left in order to make that happen.
His next one, in the state semifinals, won't be easy. It comes at 8 a.m. Friday when he takes on Mayo sophomore Vile. Not only is Vile ranked two spots ahead of him in the Class AA poll at No. 2, but he beat Beaty in their only meeting this season. It came in a marathon, Vile prevailing 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 6-1.
In the other bracket, No. 1-ranked Jackson Allen (Shakopee) meets No. 6 Ben van der Sman (East Ridge). The championship is at 11:30 a.m., as are the third-place and fifth-place matches.

Vile won both his matches easily, rolling 6-1, 6-4 in the first round and 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Century's state singles entrant, freshman Varun Iyer, fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the first round to No. 8-ranked Jake Trondson (Mounds View). Iyer went on to win his consolation match and hopes to play for fifth today.
In doubles, Century's combination of senior Sahil Chhugani and sophomore Nick Aney won both of their matches Thursday, as did Mayo senior Haakon Stans and junior Sam Morgenthaler. While Stans/Morgenthaler cruised, Chhugani/Aney had a rugged time of it in the first round. That's where they were taken to the limit by Benilde-St. Margaret's Joe Lipovetz and Nikita Snezhko, before winning 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). They followed that with a straight-sets win in the quarterfinals.
Stans/Morgenthaler and Chhugani/Aney both have semifinal matches — in opposite brackets — at 8 a.m. Friday.
Lourdes combo advances
Rochester Lourdes' best shot at a state championship remains alive and well.
The doubles team of junior Peter Erickson and senior Skylar Lopez-Kohler had little problem in their first two rounds of the state Class A tournament at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center Thursday, winning both in straight sets. They play at 8 a.m. in Friday's semifinals.
In singles, Lourdes seventh-grader Justin Bobo dropped his first-round match 6-2, 6-4 to No. 3-ranked Zach Kantor of Foley. Bobo then won his consolation-round match 6-0, 6-0 and remains alive, hoping for a fifth-place finish Friday.
Winona Cotter's Ryan Ortega (ranked ninth) blew past his opponents in the first two rounds. He faces No. 1-ranked Ben Ingbar of Blake in Friday's semifinals.
