Brotherhood set to defend state rugby title

The Rochester Brotherhood high school rugby sevens team will go into the state tournament this weekend as the defending champion and the No. 1 seed after a pair of decisive victories on Tuesday.

In the first match, The Brotherhood defeated Eagan 60-12, with senior caption Chris Tabor scoring four tries and a conversion. Malik Thomas and Derek Khammah each had two tries.

Then, in a match against East Metro, Franco again led the attack for The Brotherhood with two tries, and Colton Reed had a try and three conversions in a 36-10 win.

The field of four in the state sevens championships includes The Brotherhood, East Metro, Eagan and Eden Prairie.

The season won't end for The Brotherhood after the state tournament. The team will play in two tournaments during the summer, and coach James Driessen said next year, he plans to register The Brotherhood as a full 15s team, which will provide stiffer competition and more potential opponents.

He also said that he expects Rochester to have a girls sevens team next year.

Both teams are open to all Rochester high school students. Learn more at Brotherhoodrugby.weebly.com
