Brown finishes first season 2-0

Rochester's Mitch Brownhas completed his first season in the minor leagues with the Cleveland Indians organization.

Brown, a Century grad, was a second-round draft choice by the Indians in June. He spent his first pro season with the Arizona League Indians, a short-season league for rookies.

Brown, a right-handed pitcher, made eight starts and finished 2-0 with a 3.58 ERA. In 27 2/3 innings he has allowed 20 hits, three home runs and 11 earned runs. Brown has struck out 26 and walked 10 batters.

The Indians currently list him as No. 8 on their "Prospects Watch Top 20" of players in the minor leagues.

Aaron Senneof Rochester has completed his minor-league season with the Florida Marlins organization.

Senne, 24, was a member of the Greensboro (N.C.) Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League, which is a Class A league. The Grasshoppers ended the season as the South Atlantic League Northern Division champions.

Senne, a Mayo grade, is a left-handed hitting and throwing first baseman, who missed all of the 2011 season with an arm injury. He appeared in 84 games this season while batting .284 with 10 home runs, 16 doubles, two triples, 53 RBIs and 40 runs scored. He had a .342 on-base percentage (26 walks, 78 strikeouts) and had a .430 slugging percentage.

Left-handed relief pitcher Matt Meyerof Rochester has also completed his season in the minor leagues. Meyer, a Mayo grad, is just one notch below the Major Leagues as he pitched for the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League.

The Bees are the AAA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels.

Meyer, 27, appeared in 51 games of relief. He had a 1-2 record with 6.26 ERA. Meyer had some control issues. He pitched 41 2/3 innings, allowed 46 hits, walked 41, hit six batters and struck out 38. He did finish with 10 holds.

Kasson-Mantorville grad Jake Hodgeis the starting quarterback at Moorhead State University as a freshman.

Senior linebacker Tyler Brodyof Rochester John Marshall and freshman defensive lineman Ryan Parrof Red Wing are also members of the Moorhead State team.

Hodge has appeared in three of the team's four games. He is 35-for-69 passing for 444 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He has also rushed for 43 yards, which takes into account quarterback sacks in the college game.

Brody is also a starter. He is third on the team with 26 tackles, including one for loss.

Moorhead is struggling this year. The team is 0-4 and has been outscored 169-49.

Kallyn Barkeyof Rochester competed for the United States at the NCSA All-Star Swim Team in Japan a week ago in California.

Barkey, a sophomore at Mayo, is a club swimmer for the Rochester Orcas. She was one of 52 U.S. swimmers selected to compete in the elite meet. Japan was able to dominate the meet.

Barkey has several other big meets coming up in the future so she did not taper for the meet. She swam in six events, the 400 individual medley, 200 IM, 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle. In her division, she placed between 10th and 15th in each event.

She is beginning preparation for the USAS Junior Nationals to be held at the University of Tennessee from Dec. 6-10. She also has two other meets prior to the Junior Nationals, one in Minneapolis and the other in Milwaukee. The Junior Nationals will be the meet that she will be fully tapered in an attempt to swim her best times.
