Rochester Century rallied from a tough loss in the opening game of a doubleheader to earn a split at Mankato West on Monday.
The Panthers dropped the opener, 11-2, but rebounded for a 6-5 victory in the second game.
West's six-run first inning (five of them unearned) took Century out of the first game right away. The Panthers answered with two runs in the second inning, but that was it for their scoring. Michael Hartman was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the opener and Nick Merges had an RBI single.
Century got off to the quick start in the second game, scoring four times in the top of the first to take a permanent lead. John Meyers' two-run double highlighted the explosive opening inning. Josh Benson also had an RBI double.
The Panthers' defense stepped up late in the game, preserving the victory by turning a game-ending double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

Brad Pfeffer pitched seven strong innings, allowing seven hits and three walks to get the victory. Benson, Hartman, Matt Pearson and Von Praska had two hits each for the Panthers.
Century is back in action at 5:30 p.m. today at Faribault.

Doubleheader split

Rochester Lourdes split a doubleheader with Stewartville on Monday, winning 8-1, then falling 14-13 in eight innings.
Rick Devorak was the winning pitcher in Game 1. He tossed a five-hitter, walked none and struck out 11. Devorak also had three hits, including a double, and had two RBIs. Jason Samuelson had two hits, including a home run.
"This was one of those games where Ricky showed his dominance on the mound and at the plate," Lourdes coach Dan Herold said.
Lourdes went through five pitchers in the second game.
Stewartville had 15 hits, Lourdes 13.
The Eagles led 13-9 in the seventh inning, but the Tigers then scored four runs in the frame to second the game into extra innings. Stewartville took advantage of a wild pitch and an errant throw to third base to score the winning run in the eighth.
Robby Campbell had a two-run home run for Stewartville. The Eagles got three hits and three RBIs for Lourdes.
