MINNEAPOLIS — Chatfield made the best of its eighth tournament appearance and first since 1999 in defeating Hawley 41-21 to advance to the Prep Bowl to face Minneota/Lincoln HI, which won on Thursday.
Chatfield will be playing for its fourth title, having won three in a row from 1994 through 1996.
Chatfield dominated the game, especially for the first 24 minutes. In the first half alone, the Gophers had 264 yards of offense to Hawley’s 28 yards and held the ball for nearly twice as long. Senior running back Jacob Neis scored three times and gained 131 yards in the first half. Junior fullback Alex Bradt accounted for the fourth first-half TD. An additional two points were earned on a bad snap safety that led to a 28-0 halftime score.
The Chatfield defense was equally impressive, limiting Hawley’s running game to negative 37 yards rushing and sacking junior quarterback Jordan Harms four times.
Neis scored again midway through the fourth quarter and finished with 233 yards on 26 carries.

At game’s end, the Gophers combined for 484 rushing yards while the Nuggets were limited to a single yard. The remaining 240 yards of Hawley’s offense came through the air, including a 72-yard TD from senior Dalton Leaf, his only pass of the game, to junior tight end Ben Ellefson. Harms accounted for the remaining 168 passing yards for Hawley on 8-of-22 attempts.
Chatfield improves to 11-1, while Hawley finishes 9-2.
