City baseball wrap | Century stays hot, beats East

MANKATO — Rochester Century continued its improved play Thursday, rolling to an 8-4 Big Nine Conference baseball victory over Mankato East.

Sam Hayward had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead the Panthers. Evan Holmes was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Jordan Wright went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Alex Holets also had two hits, while Ryan Maiers added a two-RBI triple.

Thomas Bruss tossed 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits, while walking two and striking out three. Ryan Maiers tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to secure the save. He did not allow a hit and struck out one.

"(Bruss) gutted it out and made pitches when he needed to," Century coach Vinnie Mannese said. "(Maiers) was pretty sharp in shutting the door. ... Offensively, we had a handful of guys who had multiple hits. We also ran the bases extremely well, being both aggressive and smart. We were fortunate to come out ahead in the past few games, which should definitely help continue to build our confidence."

Mayo struggles in loss to Albert Lea

ALBERT LEA — The Rochester Mayo baseball team struggled at the plate, on the bases and in the field Tuesday, and the result was a 6-5 loss to Albert Lea.

"We had no right winning this game," Mayo coach Tom Senne said. "We didn't show up to play and we got the outcome we deserved. There were very few bright spots. We swung at bad pitches, we made mistakes on the base paths, we left runners on base in big spots, and we forgot to play defense in key situations. Hopefully we can forget this game and end on a high note before (the section tournament)."

Senne said the pitching staff was the lone bright spot. Dylan Deruiter pitched 2 1/3 innings of good relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit. It's unfortunate, but Deruiter took the loss on an unearned run.

Michael Stubbs got the start and lasted four innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits, while walking three and striking out two.

Stubbs led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Jared Campbell had a double and two runs scored, while Thomas Krause added a run scored and an RBI.

Mayo dropped to 11-8 overall. The Spartans return to action at 5 p.m. Monday at Northfield.
