College baseball: Honkers blanked at Waterloo

WATERLOO, Iowa — The hits kept not coming for the Rochester Honkers in a 2-0 loss to the Waterloo Bucks on Tuesday night in Northwoods League summer college baseball action.

Waterloo scored single runs in the first and sixth innings and edged Rochester in a pitchers' duel before a crowd of 656 at Riverfront Stadium.

The Honkers managed only three hits, one night after getting just one hit in a 13-1 loss to Waterloo in the series opener in Rochester.

Rochester (2-5) didn't have many opportunities either, leaving only five runners on base.

For Waterloo (6-2), Tyler Curtis (Lynn University) singled home a run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Adam McGinnis (Western Illinois) added an RBI double in the sixth for the Bucks to make it 2-0.

The Honkers squandered a good pitching performance by a trio of hurlers. Starter Isaac Friesen (Hawaii) allowed only two hits and one earned run in five innings but took the loss in his first decision. Robert Paccione (LIU) allowed one run on two hits in two innings, and Tanner Schumacher (Purdue) pitched a perfect ninth.

Winning pitcher Brett Solano (Menlo College) lasted eight innings for the Bucks, allowing three hits and seven strikeouts. Brandon Downey (Maryville University) got his third save of the season.

Rochester is at Mankato on Wednesday for a doubleheader (two seven-inning games) against the MoonDogs beginning at 6:05 p.m. The MoonDogs are in Rochester on Thursday night for the series finale.
