College baseball | RCTC 5-7, Western Technical College 2-0

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Good pitching helped the Rochester Community and Technical College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep against Western Wisconsin Technical College on Tuesday.

RCTC used three pitchers in each game and won the opener 5-2, and 7-0 in the nightcap. The Yellowjackets improved to 11-4 in the non-conference part of their season.

"We were happy to get outside again; we hadn't played in two weeks," said RCTC coach Steve Hucke. "It seemed like it was our first game of the year."

Kody Knaus, Gage Salquist and T.J. Nowak combined on the mound in the first game and scattered seven hits. Salquist got the win with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless middle relief.

The Yellowjackets scored two runs in the top of the eighth to win in extra innings. Kiefer Neumann went 2-for-4 to lead RCTC's eight-hit attack.

RCTC pitchers Brandon Gilman, Matt Dammen and Luke Beachler combined for a three-hitter in the second game. Gilman started and got the win, allowing no runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Beachler went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI for Rochester, and Tanner Marvin doubled in a run.

Rochester is scheduled to play a doubleheader at home Saturday against Minnesota West, and a single game Sunday at Fergus Falls. Hucke said those games will have to be played at alternate undetermined sites, because the fields at RCTC and at Fergus Falls are not in playing condition.

"We are having a conference call (Wednesday morning) to try find alternate locations for some of these games, even if means that we have to drive to Iowa," he said.
