MINNEAPOLIS -- Redshirt sophomore Taylor Landfair was named the Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Year on Wednesday, becoming the sixth Minnesota player to earn the honor in the past eight years.

The award comes after a comeback season that saw the outside hitter lead the conference in kills per set (4.43) and points per set (449). Landfair dealt with an abdominal injury last season, playing in just nine games.

“She’s a rare talent,” coach Hugh McCutcheon said Tuesday. “ … Here she is working and learning and changing all the way through the season. I mean it’s to her credit, right, that she isn’t satisfied with just having the talent.”

In addition to Landfair, both junior Melani Shaffmaster and freshman Carter Booth were named first team All-Big Ten. Booth and Mckenna Wucherer were named to the conference’s All-Freshman team.

With two more players unavailable Wednesday, the Gophers had roughly half that roster max against Indiana at Williams Arena.
