Disc golf is game for all ages

With 50 years separating them, there probably aren’t a lot of things that Mike Higgins and Al Faupel have in common.

But the two Rochester men do share a passion for disc golf, and they are proof that the game is playable and appealing for people of all ages.

Neither Higgins, 23, nor Faupel, 73, are new to disc golf, which is played with the same rules and scoring as the traditional game of "ball golf," as disc players call it.

Faupel has been playing the game for about 20 years, since his working days at Mayo Clinic, and Higgins picked it up about 10 years ago while in high school at Stewartville.

"It’s drastically better than ball golf because you don’t get frustrated as easily or as often," said Higgins.

"With disc golf you don’t have any problems finding your disc," Faupel said with a chuckle. "It’s a lot easier to find than a golf ball."

The disc game is also quicker to play and far more affordable. Read about it in Tuesday's print edition.
