The series:This is the 22nd meeting between the teams. Mayo leads the series 16-5 and has won the last five meetings, all in regular season.
Mayo coach Donny Holcomb:"Century was a game last year that could've gone either way. Coach Vik and his staff will do a great job to prepare their team with many skilled athletes on their squad. Defensively we need to play more solid coverage this week with the different sets we will see and the likelihood of the ball being thrown around more. We need to be able to get to the quarterback and not have breakdowns in the secondary. Offensively, we need to capitalize. With the 3-5 defense we need to be ready for the stunts and blitzes ahead of time and when opportunity comes to make a play we need to do it. We want to see our squad take a step forward in all assets of the game and improve as a whole group from week 1."
Century coach Jon Vik:"Mayo plays with an aggressive 4-3 defense that pressures the offense with strong line play and aggressive linebackers. They limited both the passing and running game of Faribault last week. Offensively, Mayo has a solid line with some hard running, quick backs that make you pay if you miss tackles. The QB is mobile and gets the ball out quickly to their outside threats. Mayo's special teams groups were impressive last week with very strong kicking units. They had big returns and a block in the punt game which put Faribault in some tough field position situations. We will have to improve our physical play this week and limit mental errors against a team that plays well in all phases of the game."
