WATERVILLE — Kenyon-Wanamingo was right in its playoff-opening game Tuesday night.
The Knights trailed by just one point at halftime, but they watched as Waterville-Elysian-Morristown put together three consecutive scoring drives to pull away for a 35-21 victory in a Section Two, Class AA quarterfinal game.
Luke Rechtzigel had a pair of short touchdown runs for the sixth-seeded Knights, who finished their season 2-7. Jake Whipple had the other K-W score, a 75-yard fumble return with less than 30 seconds to go in the first half, a touchdown that pulled the Knights within 14-13 at halftime.
But W-E-M (7-2) opened the second half with a clock-eating drive that lasted more than 15 plays and covered 75 yards. It ended in a 1-yard TD run by Mitchell Wolter for a 21-13 Buccaneers lead, and K-W couldn't recover.
W-E-M will play at No. 2 seed Pine Island at 7 p.m. Saturday.
