CHATFIELD — Zumbrota-Mazeppa built a big halftime lead, then held off Chatfield as the Gophers made a strong second-half push on Friday night.

Z-M led by three scores at halftime and held on to win 27-20 in Southeast District, White Subdistrict play.

Z-M (5-1 overall) built a 14-0 lead after one quarter on rushing touchdowns by Caden Steffen and Jacob Bennett.

After Kyle Nosbisch scored for Chatfield (1-5) early in the second quarter, Z-M receiver Jacob Niebuhr hauled in a 94-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Isaiah Stueber with less than 2 minutes to play in the second quarter.

A minute later, Steffen scored another rushing touchdown to give Z-M a 27-7 halftime lead.

Chatfield attempted to rally in the second half, as Parker Fossum scored two receiving touchdowns on passes from Dillon Bance. But the Gophers could come no closer, dropping their fourth consecutive game.

Z-M plays host to St. Charles next week, while Chatfield plays at Winona Cotter.
