Mayo is again in control of the Addington Jug.

Century had been in possession of the trophy that has for years been passed back and forth between the public Rochester football teams. To capture the Jug, a city team must beat the team that's last held it.

Century retained the Jug a week ago when it defeated John Marshall to open the season, but Mayo was too tough in Week Two as the Spartans posted a 34-14 victory. So now it's theirs.

"It feels great," Mayo quarterback Bennett Ellsworth said. "Our guys have been working hard, and it's a great team win."

While Mayo was coming off a narrow loss to Owatonna, Century entered 1-0. The host Panthers had defeated Mayo twice a year ago.

"We have a lot to learn from this," Century quarterback Nathan Eberhart said. "I think this will bring us back down to Earth. We haven't lost to Mayo in like three years."

Century opened the night with a touchdown on the game's first drive to take an 8-0 lead. But Mayo responded by scoring the game's next four touchdowns.

"We started the game with a nice drive and then started making mental mistakes," Century coach Jon Vik said. "And it was all across the board, offense, defense and special teams. I take responsibility as the coach that we didn't play the game we're capable of playing."

Mayo used short scoring runs by DeMonte Simmons and Ellsworth to take a 12-8 lead at the half and then the Spartans scored a trio of touchdowns in the third quarter to take control.

"We came out strong and knew with the momentum we had going into halftime that if we worked together as a team ,we could execute and put this game away," Ellsworth said.

Mayo used a pair of long touchdowns to provide the game's knockout punch. On the second play of the third quarter, Simmons was penned in by the Century defense while going right, but he reversed to the left side, broke around the end and went 65 yards for a touchdown.

"We had the running back all bottled up, we had him taken care of, but on our backside we had someone who lost contain, he made a nice cutback and 60 some yards later he had a touchdown," Vik said. "You can't make those type of errors when you're playing a good football team."

"A lucky play, but an athletic play by DeMonte," Mayo coach Donny Holcomb said.

Simmons' run gave Mayo a 19-8 lead. He finished with 123 yards on 12 carries.

After the teams traded touchdowns, Mayo used one more big strike to put the game away. One play after Isaiah Huber (26 carries, 140 yards) had an 11-yard TD, Mayo struck again.

Ellsworth faked a short toss to Mason Greseth and then hit a wide-open Cayden Holcomb on a deep route for a 68-yard score and a 34-14 Mayo lead.

"Mason (Greseth) did a great job selling it, and we'd been hitting that screen all game," Ellsworth said. "It was just great coaching, and we were able to execute."

Ellsworth completed 16 of 27 passes for 313 yards and a touchdown. Holcomb snared seven of those passes for a whopping 203 yards.

"We've been playing together a long time," Ellsworth said.

"I have some exciting guys ... and it was nice to see see our athletic guys show their athleticism," Donny Holcomb said.

Mayo finished with 447 yards of offense and also forced four turnovers. Along with his 203 receiving yards, Cayden Holcomb also had two interceptions.

Century finished with 353 yards. Eberhart was 12-for-21 passing for 196 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions. RJ Saar had five catches for 111 yards.

"They really truly have a nice football team, but we didn't play very well after that first drive," Vik said.

"They had big plays and then later on in the game we kind of gave up on ourselves," Eberhart said. "We can't let that happen. We can play so much better than that."
