Girls basketball | John Marshal 62, Mankato East 37

MANKATO — Rochester John Marshall regained its shooting touch and shot down Mankato East 62-37 in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game on Friday night.

JM was coming off a cold-shooting effort in a loss to Edina last Saturday, but this time the Rockets shot 56 percent from the field including 7-of-13 on three-pointers.

JM, which dropped from No. 5 to No. 8 in the Class AAAA poll this week, improved to 14-1 overall and 11-0 in the conference. East is 2-13, 2-10 in the Big Nine.

"We moved the ball well tonight which resulted in high-percentage shooting from two- and three-point range," said JM head coach Phil Schroeder. "We also did a nice job of handling Mankato's press and only had nine turnovers."

Junior forward Jamie Ruden led JM with 24 points, which is her season average, and junior center Nicole Fautsch had 14. For East, sophomore guard Shayla Karge led with 18 points.

"Defensively we had 11 steals and 20 rebounds and held the Cougars 14 points in the second half, so overall it was a good team win," Schroeder added.

JM is home against Albert Lea on Tuesday.
