Girls basketball | Lourdes 51, Byron 39
Rochester Lourdes used a sizable advantage at the free throw line to pull away to a 51-39 win over Byron in a Hiawatha Valley League girls basketball game Friday night at the Lourdes gym.
Lourdes outscored Byron 19-9 at the free throw line and the Eagles made most of them in the second half, after leading by just one point at halftime.
Lourdes won its second straight and improved to 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the HVL Gold. Byron is 4-6, 3-4 in the HVL Gold.
"This was a nice win, after a hard Rotary tournament," Lourdes coach Myron Glass. The Eagles finished third at the Holiday Classic.
Katie Helt had a big game for Lourdes with 19 points, including three three-pointers, and Megan Hobday added 13 points including 7-of-7 free throws, and had five rebounds. For Byron, Vanessa Anderson had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"They then had to foul and we made enough free throws to open the lead a little (in the second half)," Glass explained.
Lourdes has a home game Monday against Stewartville.
