Girls basketball | Mayo squanders first half lead at Winona

WINONA— Mayo built a six-point lead by halftime but couldn't hold it and lost 48-42 in a Big Nine Conference girls basketball game Monday.

Mayo surrendered a 24-18 lead at the break and dropped its second straight game to fall to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in the Big Nine.

Winona avenged a 13-point loss to Mayo in December and the Winhawks improved to 7-4 in conference and 11-7 overall.

"This was another hard-fought road game that became very physical and that is not good for the Spartans," Mayo coach Rich Decker said.

"Effort is not the issue. We just took a small step backwards with excessive turnovers and some questionable shot selection."

Anna Winter led the Spartans with 16 points and Shelby Stewart scored 15. Audrey Scharmer led the Winhawks with 15 points.

"We just need more balanced scoring if we are to have any chance down the stretch," Decker added. "A young team's margin of error is very small."

Mayo's next game is Friday at home against Albert Lea.
