Girls basketball: P-E-M slides into state championship game

MINNEAPOLIS — It wasn't easy, but Plainview-Elgin-Millville will play for a state championship in girls basketball.

MINNEAPOLIS — It wasn't easy, but Plainview-Elgin-Millville will play for a state championship in girls basketball.

Top seed P-E-M had its hands full with No. 4 seed Roseau before pulling away late to an 87-78 in a Class AA semifinal game Friday night at Mariucci Arena.

PEM survived the last few minutes without its star player senior guard Sarah Hart, who fouled out with 3:45 left and her team leading just 76-72.

Hayley Dessner starred for PEM with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Chloe Holtz survived foul trouble and finished with 20 points, including some key baskets late, after Hart had fouled out. Emmaline Polson had 12 points and nine rebounds.

For Roseau (28-5), Kiley Borowicz scored 35, after getting 33 in the quarterfinals, and Kacie Borowicz had 23.

P-E-M (30-1) won its 22nd straight and will meet No. 2 Sauk Centre (29-1) or New London-Spicer (23-6) in the Class AA state championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Williams Arena.

Last year, Dover-Eyota beat Sauk Centre in the Class AA final, 71-58.
