Girls cross country: Woltz edges Buntrock in showdown at D-E

EYOTA — Two of the region's best girls cross-country runners squared off Tuesday at the Dover-Eyota Invitational and the result was a predictably close race.

Chatfield senior Kayla Woltz pulled away down the stretch from Dover-Eyota senior Ahna Buntrock and the pair finished 1-2 among 84 runners. Woltz, who is ranked No. 6 in Class A, finished the 4-kilometer race in 16:04; Buntrock, ranked No. 7, was just three seconds back at 16:07.

Dover-Eyota had the better balance with four runners among the top eight finishers and the Eagles easily won the eight-team competition with 35 points, followed by Chatfield, Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Lake City.

• The PEM boys won the nine-team D-E Invite, with five Bulldogs runners in the top 12. St. Charles, D-E and Chatfield finished 2-3-4.

PEM senior Pat Reinschmidt won the 5K race in 16:36, finishing 11 seconds ahead of Lake City senior Carston Dammann. PEM is ranked No. 10 in Class AAA.
