Girls Hockey | JM/Lourdes 8, Austin 1

John Marshall/Lourdes Marisa Lecy puts in a rebound under the glove of Allison Hoban of Austin Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Center in Rochester.

Eleven players earned at least one point each as John Marshall/Lourdes defeated Austin 8-1 Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Center in Big Nine Conference girls hockey action.

Emma Christensen and Rebecca Freiburger each had a three-point game and Nicole Angst collected her first varsity goal.

JM/L jumped out to a 3-1 first-period lead on goals by Renee Saltness, Marisa Lecy and Tori Thompson. Lisa Bjork, Mallory Adamson, Freiburger and Angst scored for the Rockets in the second to give JM/L a 7-1 lead and a 38-7 shot advantage after two periods.

Freiburger added her second goal of the game in the third period and the Rockets finished with a 56-9 shots advantage for the game.

Eighth-grade goaltender Sophia Hyke saw her first varsity game action and came up with a few big saves.

"We played a complete game today," said JM/Lourdes coach Bob Montrose. "We knew Austin is in a transition stage and wanted to continue to play our game with good puck movement and smart choices all over the ice.

"We had a chance to get all four lines and six defenseman active throughout the game and that was a nice reward for all of the hard work the girls put in. Sophia Hyke played great in goal and showed that although she is a young player she belongs at the high school level. Emma Christensen quietly picked up three assists and continues to play her typical smart and simple game on defense for us."

JM/L is now 4-0 and on first place in the conference and 5-1 overall. Next up is Owatonna on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Rec Center.
