Girls hockey: JM/Lourdes' Big Nine win streak ends at 44

NORTHFIELD — The John Marshall/Lourdes girls hockey team hadn't lost a Big Nine conference game in nearly three years, a winning streak that stood at 44 games as the Rockets visited Northfield on Thursday.

NORTHFIELD — The John Marshall/Lourdes girls hockey team hadn't lost a Big Nine conference game in nearly three years, a winning streak that stood at 44 games as the Rockets visited Northfield on Thursday.

All good things must come to an end, and in this case, Northfield's Kate Bornhauser scored with less than a minute to play, giving the Raiders a 1-0 win and snapping the Rockets' Big Nine streak.

JM/Lourdes head coach Bob Montrose said he'd hoped the streak would end with his team getting outplayed, but that wasn't really the case.

"Tonight we were pretty bad with the puck and our execution," he said. "Now the monkey is off our back and we can begin a new chapter."

The Rockets had plenty of scoring chances and outshot Northfield 19-13, but couldn't get one past the Raiders' Mallory Tidona.

Red Wing too strong for Mayo

RED WING — Rochester Mayo stuck with Red Wing for the opening period, but the Wingers pulled away in the final two frames for a 7-1 Big Nine Conference girls hockey win Thursday night.

Paige Anglin scored Mayo's lone goal.

"The penalty calls did not go our way and we were shorthanded much of the game," Mayo coach Mike McCormack said. "We were actually pleased with our team's play. Their top line and power play accounted for most of their offense. We outshot them in the last twp periods but failed to convert.

"Lexi Grethen played her best game of the season. We moved her to center and she is learning the new position quickly. Paige Anglin is playing with a lot more confidence and was rewarded with a goal."

Grethen and Maeve Cameron assisted on Mayo's goal.
