The Rochester Mayo girls hockey team received strong play from several young skaters and received a solid effort in goal from a senior as the Spartans won their season opener 4-2 against Austin at Graham Arena on Thursday.
Sophomore Becca Schmitz scored twice for Mayo and classmate Maddie Sawyer added a goal in the victory. Seniors Sara Brakke scored once and Kali Aldrich had a pair of assists, while Rachel Schmitz stopped 14 shots in goal to earn the victory.
"The girls played very well together," Mayo coach Jeff Bolin said. "The first-year players stepped up and looked very steady. The lines matched up and the energy and flow were there."
Mayo led 2-1 after one period and 3-1 after two. Austin pulled within one with six minutes remaining in the third period, but Brakke answered for Mayo to put the game away.
Chloe Summerfield and Myia Hoium scored for Austin, while goalie Mara Overby was outstanding, with 38 saves.
