Girls Hockey: Mayo's season comes to an end

LAKEVILLE — Top-seeded Lakeville South exploded for seven goals in the second period to pull away and down No. 8 Rochester Mayo 11-0 on Wednesday in the opening round of the Section One, Class AA girls hockey tournament.

Mayo ended its season with a 9-15-2 record.

South advances to host No. 4 Dodge County at 6:45 p.m. in the 1AA semifinals.

Mayo managed just seven shots on goal Wednesday, while South put 55 shots on the board.

Morgan Morse paced South with two goals and two assists. Maddie Nelson and Ellie Lauderdale added two goals apiece.

Sophie Butterfass took the loss in net for the Spartans. She finished with 44 saves.

The Spartans are a young team that returns the bulk of its lineup next season.
