Girls Hockey: Rockets survive scare from Austin

AUSTIN — The Rochester John Marshall/Lourdes girls hockey team broke a 2-all tie in the third period to secure a 3-2 win and survive a scare from Austin High.

The Rockets still were without standouts Tori Thompson and Kate Valentine, but coach Bob Montrose said Austin played a fantastic game.

"Austin played a great game. It was easy to see they were fired up to play and gave us a very competitive effort," Montrose said. "We put 58 shots on their goalie, so we controlled most of the play, but they had some very good chances as well. I am glad our team had to battle to the end. This type of game will help us prepare for tight playoff games."

With just six minutes remaining, Rebecca Freiburger scored her second goal of the game to put the Rockets in front for good.

Brooke Hansen scored the other JML goal, with assists going to Brooklyn Birdseye and Renee Saltness.

The Rockets improved to 20-2-2 overall and 15-0 in Big Nine play. They play Red Wing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Prairie Island Arena in Red Wing for the Big Nine title.
