WINONA — Just when Rochester Mayo rallied and appeared destined to keep its season alive, Winona reversed the Spartans fortunes and ended their season.

Winona's Rachael Nelson scored with 4 minutes, 9 seconds to go in the third period to lift the Winhawks to a 5-4 victory against Mayo in a Section One, Class AA girls hockey tournament first-round game.

The No. 8-seeded Winhawks (10-13-0) advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal round. They'll play at No. 1 seed Lakeville North (17-6-2) at 7 p.m. No. 9-seeded Mayo's season comes to a close at 7-19-0.
