Mahtomedi stayed over night and completed a two-game sweep of Rochester teams Saturday with a 3-1 win over Mayo in an historic non-conference girls soccer game.
After a 25-minute rain delay due to lightning, the teams played the first game on the newly installed synthetic turf that was salvaged from the Metrodome before it was torn down.
"I was surprised how quickly the girls adjusted to the surface; it was all good," said Mayo head coach Dave Foreman. It was the season opener for the Spartans. Mahtomedi opened with an 8-0 win at Century on Friday night and is now 2-0.
"They're a very good team; they were preseason ranked No. 3 in the state," Foreman said.
Mahtomedi had a 1-0 lead at halftime and Mayo tied it up early in the second half on a penalty kick by sophomore Kayley Josephs. Foreman said the Spartans had two other shot attempts deflect off the cross bar in the second half.

Katie Meyer made 11 saves and played a strong game in goal, the coach said.
"It was a very, very even game, and we had our chances. We just got very unlucky," he said. "They are a quality team and we hung right with them. It was very encouraging the way we played."
Mayo plays at Lakeville South on Tuesday.
