The truth is that we’ve been here before.
That is, with Rochester Century playing perennial favorite Mayo close during the regular portion of the girls tennis season, only to fall decisively to it in the Section 1AA tournament.
But here is another truth: This latest regular-season meeting felt different.
Yes, Mayo prevailed 4-3 in their Big Nine Conference showdown on Thursday at the Mayo courts. But this one — more than any of the rest — hinted that the Spartans really might have something to think about on Oct. 13. That’s when the teams will almost certainly meet again in the state-qualifying section finals.
Mayo coach Dave Edwards gave a strong hint to his team on Wednesday that it had better look out for Century. That’s something that he always does. But this heads up was more forceful.

"We were pretty intense with our players during practice yesterday," Edwards said. "We knew this wasn’t going to be easy."
