Rochester Mayo held Winona to nine points in the first half and the Spartans cruised to a 48-35 Big Nine Conference girls basketball win Thursday night at the Mayo gym.
Mayo notched its second straight win and improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Winona is 3-4, 1-2 in the Big Nine.
"We played an excellent half of defense holding Winona to nine points, but getting up big at half normally means problems in the second half," Mayo coach Rich Decker said. "Our youth showed itself in the second half as we missed some easy opportunities and turned the ball over excessively. We'll learn and improve by the time we see their pressure next time."
Senior guard Shelby Stewart starred for Mayo with five three-pointers and 22 points. Sophomore center Anna Winter added 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals for the Spartans.
Mayo is home against John Marshall for a 5 p.m. game Saturday.

"Two-and-0 in the conference is always a great start, but we'll need two great halves, not one to beat a team like JM," Decker said.
