The Rochester Lourdes girls soccer team notched its first win of the season 3-1 over Plainview-Elgin-Millville on Saturday at the Rochester Regional Sports Stadium.
Freshman Brittney Gruzsynski scored two goals and senior goalie Becca Freiburger made 10 saves as Lourdes evened its record at 1-1. It was the season opener for P-E-M.
"It was a physical battle that was sparked by great hustle plays throughout," said Lourdes head coach Sarah Groven. "We had several great opportunities tonight with our set plays and were able to capitalize."
Groven said freshmen "shined," including Gruzsynski, Jordyn Berg and Jade Einertson. Juniors Madison Berg and Julia Welper both had great assists, she added.
"Each had very strong games, and it makes a huge difference when the younger players step up and take some pressure off the veterans," the coach said.

Century falls to Jefferson on penalty kick
Rochester Century allowed Bloomington Jefferson an early penalty kick, and it cost them as it fell 1-0 in the nonconference girls soccer match Saturday.

Century goalie Amanda LaDue had six saves, and the Bloomington Jefferson goalie had four.
The Jaguars' conversion of the penalty kick accounted for the game's only offense.
"It's not the way you like to lose the game," Century coach Karen LaDue said. "Jefferson did not have many other opportunities to score and to be able to win on a penalty kick is unfortunate. Its easy to get frustrated with calls; we have to keep things in perspective and know that it is early in the season. Our offense will develop."
Karen LaDue noted her team came close to scoring a couple of times but couldn't finish the job.
"I think the goals will come," she said. "The first goal is always the most difficult."
