More than 600 basketball players will take to outdoor courts near the Rochester YMCA to compete in the Gus Macker 3-on-3 tournament this weekend.
This marks the second straight year of the event in Rochester and about 150 teams are registered to play on 16 courts. The tournament is for youths and adults with divisions ranging from under 10 years old to over 32 years old.
A lot of current and former college players are expected to compete.
"And we're going to have some of the top women players in the Midwest," tournament director Steve Courts said.
Courts said the Rochester YMCA has the ability to hold a tournament that features 20 courts and up to 225 teams.
"We're about the same as last year (in terms of numbers)," he said. "We were hoping to grow a little more. Sometimes it takes a while to get your foot in the door."
Play will be held on Saturday and Sunday. Games begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and at 8 a.m. on Sunday and will run about every half hour.
The top-level women's championship game is slated for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday with the men's title game at 2:30 p.m.
A slam dunk contest will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
"Last year's winner jumped over a picnic table that had 20 kids on it," Court said. The YouTube link to see the dunk is http://youtu.be/3C33GrUBvYA.
The tournament will feature vending and merchandise booths and activities for kids. There is no charge to attend.
